The Tax Fairness for Workers Act would allow workers to deduct union dues and other work-related expenses directly from their taxable income, rather than having to itemize deductions on their tax returns. Currently, most employee business expenses are subject to strict limitations that effectively prevent workers from claiming them. This bill would make union dues fully deductible "above the line" for all workers who pay them, while also allowing employees to deduct other unreimbursed work expenses like professional fees, uniforms, or training costs without the usual restrictions. The legislation would take effect for tax years beginning after December 31, 2024, and would primarily benefit union members and workers with significant unreimbursed job-related expenses. The bill was introduced by a group of Democratic senators in April 2025.
