This bill extends the Project Safe Neighborhoods program, a federal initiative that coordinates law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and community leaders to reduce violent crime in communities across all 94 federal judicial districts. The legislation reauthorizes federal grant funding for the program from fiscal years 2026 through 2030 and expands the types of activities that can be funded, including hiring crime analysts, paying overtime for law enforcement officers and prosecutors, purchasing crime-reduction technology, and supporting multi-jurisdictional task forces. The bill also adds two new definitions to clarify that "crime analysts" and "law enforcement assistants" can be employed and funded under the program. Additionally, the Attorney General must submit annual reports to Congress detailing how each area spent Project Safe Neighborhoods funds, the community outreach efforts conducted, and violent crime statistics in those areas. The bill was introduced by a bipartisan group of senators and represents a continuation of a crime-fighting program that has operated since 2001.
