This bill allows the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino to be built within the Reserve of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., overriding previous restrictions that prohibited this location. The legislation also requires that if the museum's site is on land controlled by another federal agency, that agency must notify Congress and transfer the land to the Smithsonian as quickly as possible. Additionally, the bill strengthens requirements for the museum's Board of Trustees to present diverse perspectives and authentic experiences from Hispanic and Latino communities in its exhibits and programs by consulting a broad range of knowledgeable sources reflecting varied viewpoints and political ideologies. The Smithsonian Secretary must report to Congress every two years on how the museum is meeting these requirements. The bill has bipartisan support and was referred to the House Committees on Administration and Natural Resources.
