This resolution celebrates the 50th anniversary of women's admission to U.S. service academies and honors the pioneering women of the Class of 1980. In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed legislation requiring the Military Academy at West Point, the Naval Academy at Annapolis, the Air Force Academy, and the Coast Guard Academy to admit qualified women. Starting in summer 1976, a total of 395 female cadets and midshipmen entered these institutions for the first time, facing significant cultural and institutional challenges while breaking barriers in military training. The resolution recognizes the courage and achievements of these women and acknowledges that tens of thousands of women have since graduated from the service academies and served in every branch of the Armed Forces, including combat and leadership roles. The House also encourages the service academies to continue documenting and preserving the history of women's integration into military service.
