This resolution recognizes suicide as a serious public health problem in the United States and expresses support for designating September 8, 2026, as "988 Day" to honor the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. According to the resolution, suicide was the second-leading cause of death for people aged 10 to 34 in 2024, claiming more than 48,800 lives that year. The 988 Lifeline, which launched in July 2022 as a three-digit nationwide dialing code, has handled nearly 26.2 million contacts since its creation and offers free crisis support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through phone, text, chat, and TTY services in over 240 languages. The resolution calls on Congress to recognize the Lifeline's critical role in suicide prevention, encourage public education about its availability, and support continued expansion of mental health services and crisis intervention programs nationwide.
