The CHILD Act of 2025 expands who can be covered by background checks under the National Child Protection Act of 1993. It lets businesses and organizations that work with vulnerable people request checks not only for their employees and volunteers, but also for contractors who work with them and for people they license or certify to provide care. The bill applies to entities that work with vulnerable populations, including children and others needing protection. It does not authorize new federal spending and instead changes the rules for who may be screened. The Senate passed the bill on April 21, 2026.
