The AFTER SCHOOL Act authorizes the Attorney General to award grants totaling up to $15 million per year (for fiscal years 2026-2029) to local school districts and nonprofit organizations to operate after-school programs in counties with high rates of juvenile crime. Eligible recipients must be located in counties where violent crimes committed by juveniles (ages 19 and under) represent at least 10 percent of all violent offenses, and programs must serve middle and high school students during non-school hours with educational activities focused on learning, skill development, youth leadership, and safe environments. Grants will be distributed proportionally based on the number of eligible students each organization plans to serve, and recipients must submit annual reports to the Attorney General detailing how many schools and students they serve and the program's outcomes, with the Attorney General then reporting to Congress.
