This resolution honors the life and service of former Louisiana Senator John Bennett Johnston Jr., who died at age 92. Johnston served Louisiana in the U.S. Senate from 1972 to 1997, following earlier service in the Louisiana House and State Senate, and was particularly influential as Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee from 1987 to 1995. During his Senate tenure, he championed legislation on flood control, energy policy including offshore oil and gas drilling, natural gas deregulation, wetlands preservation, and the creation of national wildlife refuges and historical parks in Louisiana. The resolution was introduced by Louisiana's current senators and supported by nearly the entire Senate membership. As a mark of respect, the Senate adjourned following the adoption of this memorial resolution.
