S. 1680
This bill would add approximately 5,600 acres of Virginia's George Washington National Forest to two existing wilderness areas. It adds 1,000 acres to the Rough Mountain Wilderness Area immediately upon enactment, while designating 4,600 acres as a "potential wilderness" addition to the Rich Hole Wilderness Area. The Rich Hole addition would become full wilderness within five years or sooner if the Forest Service completes planned water quality improvement projects in the area. During this interim period, the Forest Service can use motorized equipment in the potential wilderness area to implement ecosystem restoration activities outlined in a 2015 restoration plan. The legislation primarily affects outdoor recreation users, conservation groups, and Forest Service management in Virginia, and does not include specific funding provisions.
