S. 1699
The Artificial Intelligence Public Awareness and Education Campaign Act would require the Secretary of Commerce to launch a nationwide public education campaign about artificial intelligence within 180 days of passage. The campaign would inform Americans about how AI is used in their daily lives, teach people to recognize AI-generated content like deepfakes, highlight risks like AI-enabled scams targeting seniors, and explain legal rights and best practices for using AI-based products and services. The bill directs the campaign to reach diverse audiences through multiple channels including TV, radio, and online platforms, with materials available in multiple languages, and requires the Secretary to consult with experts from academia, industry, government agencies, and community organizations. The Secretary must publish annual reports to Congress measuring the campaign's effectiveness and updating materials to reflect new developments in AI technology. The campaign would sunset five years after enactment, and the bill specifies no additional federal funding is needed—existing agency resources would support the effort.
