The Larry Henderson Act would significantly increase federal penalties for assaulting federal officers and employees by imposing a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in prison for any such assault that causes bodily harm or injury. Currently, federal law allows judges discretion in sentencing these crimes; this bill would eliminate that flexibility and require the 20-year minimum sentence in all cases involving federal workers performing their official duties. The legislation would apply exclusively to assaults against federal employees and would override any conflicting state laws on the matter. The bill takes effect upon enactment and applies to all offenses committed after the law passes. The measure was introduced in May 2025 and referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee for review.
