This bill requires the Secretary of Commerce to study whether the United States can feasibly manufacture products needed for critical infrastructure that are currently being imported. The study must examine products essential for operating, maintaining, or restoring America's 16 critical infrastructure sectors, such as energy, transportation, and communications systems, that are in high demand but imported due to U.S. manufacturing or supply chain limitations. The Commerce Department has one year to complete the study and must analyze the costs, benefits, and job impacts of domestic manufacturing, as well as identify federal policies that may create barriers to U.S. production. Within 18 months of the bill's enactment, the Secretary must submit a report to Congress with recommendations and make an unclassified version available to the public. The bill does not provide any funding or give the Commerce Department authority to force companies to provide information for the study.
