This Senate resolution designates April 4, 2025, as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, and reaffirms U.S. commitment to eliminating landmines and unexploded ordnance worldwide. The resolution highlights that landmines and unexploded ordnance threaten civilians in at least 60 countries, have caused over 141,500 recorded deaths and injuries since 2001, and block displaced people from returning home and rebuilding their lives. The U.S. has been a global leader on this issue, providing over $5 billion in weapons destruction assistance to more than 125 countries since 1993 and allocating more than $350 million through the Leahy War Victims Fund for rehabilitation and support to mine survivors. The resolution particularly emphasizes recent humanitarian crises, including Ukraine's contamination with landmines and unexploded ordnance affecting one-third of its territory, as well as ongoing impacts in Southeast Asia from the Vietnam War era, which has killed and injured tens of thousands in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The Senate calls on the U.S. Government to continue funding demining activities, maintain international leadership on this issue, and treat legacy mine contamination as an urgent humanitarian priority.
