The Access Technology Affordability Act creates a new tax credit to help blind individuals afford assistive technology such as screen readers, speech synthesizers, and other software or hardware that converts visual information into accessible formats. Eligible taxpayers—including blind individuals themselves, their spouses, and parents or guardians of blind dependents—can claim up to $2,000 in tax credits per person over any three consecutive years for unreimbursed technology purchases. The credit is refundable, meaning eligible individuals can receive money back even if they owe no income tax. The $2,000 limit will automatically adjust upward after 2026 to account for inflation, and the entire provision expires after December 31, 2030, unless Congress extends it. The bill takes effect for tax years beginning after December 31, 2025.
