The El Salvador Accountability Act of 2025 would impose broad economic and diplomatic sanctions against Salvadoran government officials under President Nayib Bukele, including the president, vice president, cabinet ministers, and other officials involved in human rights violations or corruption. The sanctions include freezing U.S. assets, denying visas and entry to the United States, prohibiting U.S. loans, and blocking foreign exchange transactions. The bill also directs the U.S. Treasury to oppose loans to El Salvador through international financial institutions and halts all U.S. foreign aid to the Salvadoran government. These measures would remain in place for at least four years and can only be lifted if the president certifies that El Salvador has ended gross human rights violations and stopped using U.S. taxpayer funds to infringe on Americans' constitutional rights. The bill requires the State Department to report within 90 days on how Salvadoran officials use cryptocurrency for corruption and sanctions evasion, with findings to be made public.
