The CHECKPOINT Act establishes a new Checkpoint Program Management Office within the U.S. Border Patrol to oversee border checkpoint operations nationwide and improve data collection and training practices. The office will be led by an Assistant Chief and will be responsible for maintaining policies, conducting regular training on data entry and procedures, reviewing checkpoint staffing and resources, and coordinating with other border security divisions. The bill requires the Border Patrol to collect detailed data on apprehensions, seizures, technology use, and other enforcement actions at checkpoints, and to develop a plan addressing data quality issues identified in a 2022 Government Accountability Office report. The bill requires annual reports to Congress on data collection efforts and checkpoint operations, plus a Government Accountability Office review of the office's effectiveness within 18 months. The legislation contains no new funding authorization and will expire automatically after five years.
