The Algorithmic Accountability Act of 2025 requires large technology companies and algorithm developers to conduct impact assessments before and after deploying automated decision systems used in critical areas like employment, housing, credit, healthcare, and education. The law applies to companies with over $50 million in annual revenue (or $250 million in equity) that use algorithms for consequential consumer decisions, as well as smaller companies ($5+ million revenue) that develop such systems for others. Within two years, the Federal Trade Commission must issue detailed regulations and establish a publicly searchable database showing what algorithms companies use, how they work, and how consumers can appeal decisions. The FTC will create a new Bureau of Technology with at least 50 staff members to oversee compliance, companies must submit summary reports of their assessment findings, and violations are treated as unfair trade practices enforceable by the FTC and state attorneys general through civil lawsuits.
