The Habitat Enhancement Now Act establishes two federal grant programs to help protect migratory waterfowl populations across North America. The second program specifically supports breeding habitat development in California through grants that help landowners establish nesting areas, create ponds for young ducklings, and implement other wildlife-friendly practices. The Secretary of the Interior will administer both competitive grant programs, which are open to state and local governments, tribes, nonprofits, and individuals. The legislation allocates $3.5 million annually for each program through fiscal year 2030, totaling $7 million per year, to address declining duck populations caused by the loss of quality breeding habitat.
