Referred to the Committee on Education and Workforce, and in addition to the Committee on the Judiciary, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
The College Employment Accountability Act would require colleges and universities to use the E-Verify system to check the legal employment status of their workers in order to receive federal student aid and institutional funding. Under this bill, any college found to be employing unauthorized workers would lose its eligibility for federal financial assistance programs. The Department of Homeland Security would monitor compliance every six months and notify the Education Department within ten days if a school violates immigration employment laws or fails to participate in E-Verify. The legislation essentially makes federal funding for colleges conditional on their participation in workplace immigration verification, affecting millions of students who rely on federal student loans and grants as well as the institutions themselves that depend on this federal support.
