The Fighting Fibers Act requires all new washing machines sold in the United States starting January 1, 2030, to include a microfiber filtration system that captures tiny fabric fibers before they enter waterways. The filtration system must either have a mesh size of 100 micrometers or smaller, or meet an equivalent standard established by the EPA and Department of Energy, and machines must display a visible label instructing consumers to regularly check and empty the filter. The bill affects both residential and commercial washing machine manufacturers and sellers, who face civil penalties of up to $10,000 for a first violation and $30,000 for subsequent violations. Additionally, the EPA must conduct a nationwide study within one year to examine the presence of microfibers in the environment and human body, whether they pose health risks, and whether they disproportionately affect environmental justice communities. The agencies have authority to establish additional filtration standards and labeling requirements through future regulations.
