The Department of Defense PFAS Discharge Prevention Act requires the Department of Defense to update water pollution permits at its facilities to better control the discharge of harmful "forever chemicals" known as PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances). Within one year of enactment, the Pentagon must request modifications to stormwater permits at its facilities to include quarterly monitoring of PFAS discharge and implementation of pollution control measures, unless a permit already contains these protections. The bill affects all Department of Defense facilities with active stormwater discharge permits and requires the Pentagon to dedicate at least one percent of its annual PFAS remediation budget toward monitoring and reducing discharges under this requirement. This legislation aims to prevent these persistent chemicals from contaminating groundwater and surface water near military installations.
