Referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and in addition to the Committee on the Judiciary, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
The Iranian Terror Prevention Act directs the Secretary of State to designate 29 specific organizations—primarily Iran-backed militias, Iraqi paramilitary groups, and the Houthis—as foreign terrorist organizations within 90 days of the bill's enactment. Additionally, the President must determine within 60 days whether to impose financial sanctions on 22 of these organizations and any entities affiliated with them, using existing executive authorities to block their property and prohibit U.S. transactions with them. The bill affects members and supporters of these designated groups, as well as any businesses or individuals doing business with them, subjecting them to criminal penalties and asset freezes. The legislation requires the State Department to submit reports to Congress every 180 days identifying any new entities warranting terrorist designation or sanctions, and the President must explain within 60 days whether he is actually imposing sanctions on the listed organizations.
