Referred to the Committee on the Judiciary, and in addition to the Committees on Education and Workforce, and Veterans' Affairs, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
The Ensuring Safer Schools Act of 2025 prioritizes hiring veterans and retired law enforcement officers as school resource officers by modifying federal grant programs that fund law enforcement in schools. The bill amends the COPS (Community Oriented Policing Services) grants to explicitly allow funds to be used for recruiting and training these individuals, and gives preference to grant applications that focus on hiring veterans and retired officers for school safety roles. The legislation also requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to help connect veterans interested in school resource officer positions with local law enforcement agencies, and mandates that schools provide annual mental health screenings and training for school resource officers on tactics and response. Additionally, school resource officers must meet with students at least once annually to build relationships and improve community engagement within schools.
