The legislation requires government agencies and data brokers to prevent the public posting and sale of sensitive personal information like home addresses, phone numbers, school locations, and vehicle information for at-risk individuals (members of Congress, their immediate family members, designated staff, and former members). At-risk individuals can file notices with government agencies requesting that their covered information be removed from public records within 72 hours, and they can similarly request that data brokers and other businesses stop selling or publicly displaying their personal details. The bill includes exceptions for legitimate news reporting and information the individual voluntarily shares themselves, and it allows the attorney general or state attorneys general to enforce violations against data brokers while permitting affected individuals to sue for injunctive relief. The law broadly protects covered information while preserving freedom of the press and does not restrict legitimate law enforcement information sharing.
