S. 2879 requires Medicare Advantage organizations to pay healthcare provider claims faster and penalizes them for delays. Specifically, the bill mandates that Medicare Advantage plans pay at least 95 percent of complete, error-free claims submitted by doctors and hospitals within 14 days for electronic claims (or 30 days for other claims), whether or not the provider has a contract with the plan. If plans fail to meet these payment deadlines, they must pay interest to providers at the federal prompt payment rate and face civil penalties of up to $25,000 per violation. Additionally, the law requires Medicare Advantage plans to publicly report their compliance with these payment requirements, including how many claims were paid on time and how much interest was paid. These new requirements take effect January 1, 2027.
