This bill aims to help address the affordable housing shortage by making it easier to use federal land for housing development. It amends existing law to officially recognize affordable housing as a legitimate public purpose for which federal lands can be used, removing a legal barrier to such projects. The bill also creates a Joint Task Force led by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Interior that will identify unused federal land suitable for housing, streamline the process for transferring that land, and study the broader costs to communities when affordable housing is scarce. The task force must submit yearly progress reports to Congress and will operate for ten years from the bill's enactment, giving the government a decade to implement these housing solutions.
