Referred to the Committee on Education and Workforce, and in addition to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
The Nurses for Under-Resourced Schools Everywhere (NURSE) Act would establish a federal grant program to help school districts hire more school nurses in public elementary and secondary schools. The grants, awarded competitively by the Department of Education, would target districts where at least 20 percent of students qualify for free or reduced-price school lunch programs, with priority given to high-need districts that currently lack school nurses or have the greatest health needs. The federal government would cover up to 75 percent of costs in the first year, with the federal share declining in subsequent years to encourage districts to sustain funding through state and local sources. The bill authorizes unspecified funding for fiscal years 2026 through 2030, and requires the Education Department to report to Congress within two years on whether the program successfully increased the number of school nurses and improved student health outcomes, academic achievement, and attendance.
