Referred to the Committee on Education and Workforce, and in addition to the Committees on Oversight and Government Reform, and House Administration, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
The MIL FMLA Act expands federal family leave protections for military families and veterans by amending the Family and Medical Leave Act. The bill extends leave eligibility to include domestic partners and broadens the definition of "family" to cover extended relatives such as grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews, as well as individuals with close family-like relationships to servicemembers. It creates two new leave entitlements: 26 weeks of "servicemember family leave" for employees to care for injured or ill servicemembers, and 26 weeks of "veteran leave" for employees who are unable to work due to service-connected injuries or illnesses. The bill also allows reserve component members to take leave for active duty deployments, Title 32 duty, and state emergency responses lasting 14 or more days. These protections apply to both private-sector employees covered by the federal FMLA and federal civilian employees under Title 5.
