The Barriers to Suicide Act directs the Department of Transportation to create a grant program that funds the installation of suicide prevention nets, barriers, and other evidence-based deterrents on bridges, buildings, parking garages, highway-rail crossings, and rail stations. States, local governments, and other eligible entities can apply for competitive grants covering up to 80 percent of project costs, with priority given to areas experiencing high suicide rates. The bill authorizes $10 million annually for fiscal years 2026 through 2030 to support these installations. Additionally, the legislation requires the Government Accountability Office to study the effectiveness of suicide prevention barriers and nets on non-bridge structures within one year and report findings to relevant congressional committees.
