The Reducing Waste in National Parks Act directs the National Park Service to establish a program within 180 days to reduce and eliminate disposable plastic products across all national parks. The law requires park officials to phase out the sale of bottled water in plastic containers and other disposable plastic items—including plastic bags, foam products, and plastic food packaging—while considering practical factors like infrastructure costs, visitor safety, and impacts on park concession businesses. Parks must develop visitor education strategies to prepare guests to bring their own water bottles and install refill stations where feasible. Every two years, park officials must evaluate the program's effectiveness by measuring public response, visitor satisfaction, water availability concerns, safety incidents, and waste reduction rates. The legislation applies to all national park units but allows parks that already stopped selling bottled water to maintain that policy.
