This bill authorizes Congress to award a Congressional Gold Medal to Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, a civil rights activist who played a significant role in the nonviolent civil rights movement of the 1960s. Mulholland participated in sit-ins, Freedom Rides, and other direct action campaigns across the South, risking her safety to challenge racial segregation, and later dedicated her career to educating others about civil rights and equality. The Secretary of the Treasury will design and strike the gold medal, which will be presented by the Speaker of the House and President pro Tempore of the Senate, with the medal ultimately given to Mulholland or her son. The cost of producing the medal will be covered by the United States Mint Public Enterprise Fund, and the government may also produce and sell duplicate bronze versions of the medal, with any sales revenue returning to the Mint fund.
