The BRIDGE Act establishes a new federal grant program to help public transit agencies repair, replace, and maintain bridges used by commuter rail systems. The program is administered by the Department of Transportation and makes grants available to transit operators on a competitive basis, with preference given to older bridges in poor condition and projects already identified as priorities in agencies' asset management plans. The legislation authorizes $1.5 billion annually for fiscal years 2027 through 2031 to fund these grants. Eligible costs are limited to the actual capital expenses attributable to commuter rail use, and applicants without bridge ownership must first secure an access agreement with the bridge owner. Grant recipients must follow the same terms and conditions as existing federal transit grants and the Secretary must complete the application review and award process within 75 days or by the end of the fiscal year, whichever comes first.
