Referred to the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, and in addition to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
The Safe Stay Act requires all places of public accommodation—such as hotels and motels—to install carbon monoxide alarms in every sleeping or dwelling unit, following standards set by the International Fire Code or the National Fire Protection Association. The bill amends the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act of 1974 to make this a mandatory safety requirement and tasks the Federal Emergency Management Agency with updating state and federal lists of fire safety standards to reflect this new requirement. Additionally, hotel and motel owners must provide written notice to guests at check-in confirming compliance with the carbon monoxide alarm requirement. The Federal Trade Commission will enforce this notice requirement as of one year after the law is enacted, treating violations as unfair or deceptive business practices subject to FTC penalties.
