The Right to Redress Act would allow people injured or killed by federal law enforcement officers to sue the federal government directly in court for money damages, bypassing the current requirement to first submit claims to federal agencies. Currently, the Federal Tort Claims Act requires claimants to present their cases to the relevant agency before filing a lawsuit, which can delay justice. Under this bill, victims of federal law enforcement negligence or wrongful acts could go straight to federal court and request a jury trial. The bill applies to any claims arising before, on, or after its enactment, though it does not revive expired claims or reopen cases already settled or decided. The legislation was introduced in February 2026 by Senators Booker, Blumenthal, and Merkley.
