H.R. 3808 amends Medicare rules to expand mental health services available to seniors by allowing clinical social workers to provide a broader range of mental health treatments outside of skilled nursing facilities and hospitals. Currently, Medicare limits what clinical social workers can bill for, but this bill would allow them to offer additional services for health and behavior assessment and intervention using specific billing codes that took effect in 2023. The changes apply to Medicare (Title XVIII of the Social Security Act) and would take effect on January 1, 2026. The bill was introduced by Representatives Fitzpatrick and Tonko and referred to the House Committees on Ways and Means and Energy and Commerce.
