Jaime's Law would require background checks for ammunition purchases by extending existing firearm transfer rules to ammunition sales. Under the bill, unlicensed individuals could not transfer ammunition to other unlicensed individuals without going through a licensed firearms dealer, who would conduct the same background check required for firearms transfers to ensure the buyer is not prohibited from possessing ammunition under federal or state law. The legislation includes exceptions for law enforcement, temporary transfers within families, emergency situations, hunting and fishing activities with reasonable safeguards, and shooting at ranges. The bill would take effect 180 days after enactment and clarifies that it does not create a national ammunition registry or prevent states from enacting their own ammunition transfer rules.
