The Health Equity and Access under the Law for Immigrant Families Act of 2025 expands health insurance access for immigrants by removing legal barriers in federal health programs. The bill requires states to cover all lawfully present immigrants under Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), regardless of how long they've lived in the U.S., and allows undocumented immigrants to buy health insurance through the Affordable Care Act exchanges and potentially receive subsidies. It also allows states to voluntarily extend Medicaid and CHIP coverage to undocumented immigrants if they choose. Most provisions take effect 90 days after enactment, with tax credit and subsidy changes effective in 2026.
