The Child Suicide Prevention Act establishes two federal grant programs to reduce suicide among young people under age 26. The first program, funded at $20 million for fiscal years 2027 through 2030, provides grants to hospitals, health departments, nonprofits, and other eligible entities to train healthcare providers on suicide risk assessment, lethal means safety including firearm storage, and intervention strategies. Recipients may use up to 15 percent of their grant funds to distribute secure gun storage devices at reduced or no cost to households with young people. The second program, funded at $10 million for the same period, grants money to medical schools, nursing schools, and other health professions education programs to develop and integrate suicide prevention and firearm safety curricula into their training programs. Additionally, the bill directs the Department of Health and Human Services to create and maintain a public website sharing best practices on youth suicide prevention and firearm safety, and requires annual reporting from grant recipients through 2030.
