Referred to the Committee on Financial Services, and in addition to the Committee on Veterans' Affairs, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
This bill requires federal agencies to update their mortgage underwriting systems to allow lenders to count cryptocurrency holdings as part of a borrower's assets when evaluating mortgage applications. The law applies to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Agriculture, Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Federal Housing Finance Agency (which oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac). Within 24 months of enactment, these agencies must modify their automated underwriting programs, guidelines, and standards so that mortgage lenders can consider the value of digital assets held in cryptocurrency exchange brokerage accounts during the credit evaluation process. The bill does not provide specific funding but directs agencies to use their existing authority to implement these changes. This change could potentially help cryptocurrency holders qualify for mortgages by demonstrating additional financial assets.
