The Multigenerational Caregiving Data Act requires the federal government to collect information about Americans who simultaneously care for both children and older or disabled adults. Within three years of the law's enactment, at least one major federal survey such as the Census Bureau's American Community Survey or the Current Population Survey must add a question to identify people providing unpaid multigenerational care in the previous year. The bill requires federal agencies to test the question for clarity before implementation and allows flexibility in how the question is worded to reduce burden on survey respondents. Two years after the question is added to a survey, the Department of Commerce must report to Congress on how well the question worked, data quality, and whether it should be expanded, modified, or discontinued, with results published publicly.
