Referred to the Committee on the Judiciary, and in addition to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
The SEEK HELP Act provides legal protections for people who seek emergency help during drug overdoses. Specifically, it protects individuals from prosecution for drug possession if they call 911 or contact emergency services when they or someone else is overdosing, and it shields people who administer overdose-reversal drugs like naloxone from civil lawsuits as long as they act in good faith. The bill also authorizes the Department of Health and Human Services to conduct a public awareness campaign explaining these protections and allows states receiving federal health grants to use those funds for training law enforcement and educating the public about overdose Good Samaritan laws. Within two years, the Government Accountability Office must report to Congress on how well these laws are working, including data on overdose calls, fatalities, and barriers communities face in using these protections.
