The PFAS Alternatives Act directs the Department of Health and Human Services to establish a research grant program to develop and test firefighter turnout gear that does not contain PFAS, chemicals that have been linked to health problems including cancer. The bill authorizes $25 million annually from 2027 through 2031 for research and development grants to nonprofits, universities, and fire safety organizations that partner with firefighting groups to create and test PFAS-free protective equipment. Beginning in 2028, an additional $2 million per year through 2032 will fund training programs to educate firefighters on how to safely wear, clean, and maintain the new gear to reduce harmful exposures. The legislation affects firefighters and emergency responders who currently use turnout gear containing PFAS, and seeks to accelerate innovation in safer protective equipment while ensuring first responders know how to use it properly.
