The Rural and Municipal Utility Cybersecurity Act reauthorizes and strengthens a federal program that provides grants, technical assistance, and funding to help smaller electric utilities protect themselves from cyberattacks. The bill targets rural electric cooperatives, municipal utilities, and smaller investor-owned utilities that sell less than 4 million megawatt hours annually, as well as nonprofit partnerships of these entities. The program prioritizes support for utilities with limited cybersecurity resources and those managing critical infrastructure essential to the nation's power grid reliability. Congress authorizes $250 million in funding for this program over five fiscal years from 2027 through 2031. Information shared between utilities and federal, state, or local governments through this program receives legal protection from public disclosure requirements.
