The Michelle Alyssa Go Act would change federal Medicaid rules to allow smaller mental health and substance abuse treatment facilities to receive Medicaid funding. Currently, Medicaid generally does not cover care at institutions specializing in mental health treatment, but this bill would create an exception for facilities with 36 beds or fewer that meet specific evidence-based standards for mental health and addiction treatment services, such as those established by the American Society of Addiction Medicine. The change would give states the ability to use Medicaid to pay for care at these smaller, specialized facilities beginning 180 days after the bill becomes law. This legislation could expand access to mental health and addiction treatment in underserved communities by making it easier for smaller treatment centers to operate with federal funding. The bill was introduced with bipartisan support in September 2025 and was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
