# Summary of S. 5525: Banning Toxics from Plastic Bottles Act of 2026 This bill prohibits retailers from selling single-use beverage containers that contain toxic substances, are made from certain plastics, or have colors and additives that prevent recycling. The ban applies to containers holding up to three liters of any drinkable liquid, with specific restrictions on opaque or darkly pigmented bottles and containers made from polyethylene terephthalate glycol. The prohibition takes effect two years after the bill becomes law. Retailers who violate the law face fines up to $50,000 per product line affected. Money collected from these fines goes into a new Local Clean Up of Plastics Fund that provides grants to local governments for improvements to waste management, water systems, recycling facilities, and composting facilities, with priority given to rural and underserved communities.
