The No Shame at School Act of 2025 amends federal school meal programs to protect students from stigma and debt-related consequences related to unpaid meal fees. The bill requires schools to automatically certify eligible students for free or reduced-price meals and to retroactively reimburse families going back to the start of the school year once they qualify. Schools are prohibited from publicly identifying students with unpaid meal balances through special tokens, announcements, or other visible means, and cannot withhold grades, extracurricular activities, or educational services due to meal debt. Schools are also barred from using debt collectors to pursue unpaid fees or directly communicating with students about debt (except through sealed letters to parents). Additionally, schools cannot dispose of or take away food already served to a student based on unpaid meal status. These protections apply to all students with meal debt and those eligible for free or reduced-price meals, affecting millions of school children across the country who participate in federal lunch and breakfast programs.
