The Gold King Mine Spill Compensation Act of 2025 authorizes compensation for individuals, farms, ranches, and businesses harmed by the August 2015 Gold King Mine spill in Colorado, which released over 3 million gallons of acid mine drainage containing heavy metals into the Animas and San Juan Rivers. The bill compensates those who suffered documented losses including personal injury, lost business income, livestock relocation costs, and reduced agricultural yields between August 2015 and December 2015, but excludes emotional distress and cleanup costs. To qualify, claimants must have submitted a formal claim to the EPA by August 2017, have not already settled with the government for more than $2,500, and cannot be mining companies or mining-related businesses. The EPA Administrator has 180 days to determine and process each claim, with claimants able to appeal decisions to federal court, and the bill appropriates up to $3.3 million for fiscal year 2025 to pay these claims.
