Referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and in addition to the Committee on the Judiciary, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
This bill directs the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct a comprehensive study on how fentanyl, synthetic opioids, and methamphetamine are sold illegally online. The study will examine how drug dealers operate their businesses, move products, find customers, and handle payments through online platforms, with special attention to how these activities affect minors. The bill also requires the GAO to analyze federal law enforcement efforts to combat online drug trafficking, including how different government agencies coordinate with each other, work with state and local authorities, and partner with private companies and tech platforms. Additionally, the study will evaluate how online platforms detect and prevent illegal drug sales using technology like artificial intelligence, what enforcement actions they take against sellers, and how many referrals platforms make to federal authorities that result in arrests or prosecutions. The GAO must submit its full findings and recommendations to Congress within one year of the bill's enactment.
