S. 619 requires credit reporting agencies to place security freezes on the credit files of children and other "protected consumers" more quickly and efficiently when a parent or guardian requests one. Under the bill, agencies must place a freeze at no cost within three business days of receiving a proper request from a representative, and must notify other credit reporting agencies within the same timeframe so they also freeze the child's credit file within three days of notification. This legislation addresses identity theft risks for minors by streamlining what is currently a slower process. The bill, introduced by Senators Hassan and Cornyn in February 2025, would take effect 18 months after enactment, giving credit reporting agencies time to update their systems to meet the new three-day requirement.
