The ADA 30 Days to Comply Act would modify the Americans with Disabilities Act by requiring a 30-day remediation period before someone can file a lawsuit over architectural barriers in public buildings. Under this bill, a person with a disability must first send a detailed written notice to the building owner or operator identifying the specific accessibility barrier and describing when they were denied access. The building owner would then have 30 days to either provide a written plan for removing the barrier or actually remove it (or show substantial progress if removal takes longer due to circumstances beyond their control). If the owner fails to respond with a plan or fails to remove the barrier within the timeframe, only then can the person file a civil lawsuit. The bill does not apply if the owner has already stated they have no intention of complying with accessibility requirements, nor does it require someone to pursue this process if they have actual notice that compliance won't happen.
